Pulling his shirt from his pants and using his shirt tail as a rag, Todd quickly wiped his fingerprints from the front door handle and doorbell.

He prayed he hadn’t touched anything else as he jumped in the Vanquish. Caterina was already inside the car waiting for him. Todd spun the car around. As they headed toward the main road, the sounds of sirens grew louder.

Was there a fire somewhere or was it the police? Todd’s hands tightened on the wheel. He stepped a little heavier on the gas pedal.

“Now what?” Caterina asked.

“We go our separate ways.” No one had seen them enter or leave Gunther Graff’s house. There was a good chance he’d get out of this unscathed. That was something. He’d be broke, but at least he wouldn’t be sitting in a squalid Broward County jail cell.

Caterina wrapped her arms around the purse on her lap. “That suits me, Mr. Jones.”

Todd glanced at her. Now he was Mr. Jones?

“I’m afraid you aren’t my type,” she said in answer to his unasked question.

Todd had seen Caterina’s type plenty of times. “Ditto.” He generally tried to avoid crazy, larcenous women. Not that it all had worked. “I’ll drop you off at your hotel.”

“Put the top up. I’m cold.”

Todd slowed and raised the convertible top. Her skin wasn’t the only thing cold. Why the ice treatment? Was she in shock?

“Who would want to kill your ex-husband?”

“I don’t know.” Her voice sounded wooden.

Todd had a feeling seeing her former husband at his desk with a damp, red hole in his chest had unsettled her more than it had him. He’d been surprised but the man had meant nothing to him, nothing good anyway.

Caterina seemed to be shutting down. Had she still harbored feelings for Gunther? “Did he have any special enemies?”

“He grew up in a wealthy family and liked to have his way—in business and in his personal life. That didn’t make him many friends. Even his so-called golfing buddies were nothing more than business associates.” She rubbed her arms to fight back the cold.

“In fact, I’m not sure he had any real friends at all. As for enemies, I don’t know. But to shoot him in cold blood? I don’t know.” She pushed the controls for heat. “Money is the weapon of choice for men like my ex-husband, not guns.”

Todd couldn’t wholly agree with that. He’d seen Gunther’s use of more vulgar means to make his point, such as firebombing his car.

“My guess is that Gunther was surprised by a burglar who then shot him. We’ve had trouble at the house before. That’s why there was so much security in place.”

“That’s possible.” They’d seen little of the house and left in a hurry. Theft could have been involved. He’d watch the news and read the newspapers, see what the newshounds had to say about the death and the circumstances surrounding it.

Time would tell.

They drove the rest of the way to Boca Raton in silence. Todd was deep in his own thoughts. Okay, Graff got his damned memorabilia back, for what it was worth to a dead man.
